Fodder development in sub?Saharan Africa: An introduction

Livestock systems play a key role in the sustainability and livelihood of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The human population SSA is rapidly increasing, resulting steady growth demand for animal-sourced foods (ASF). Most current agricultural production practices coupled with poor management, health challenges indigenous breeds, result low crop livestock productivity often do not meet local demands. To improve productivity, locally adapted technologies management need to be widely adopted. This special issue collection contributions addressing major aspects SSA. Key topics addressed include present status feedstuff availability SSA, improved fodder utilization practices, new cultivars, soil forage conservation, use near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) tools measure nutritive value, social economic crop-livestock systems. overarching goal this provide insightful information that can used future development implementation efficient sustainable integrated will have feeding itself world future, cropping are crucial components process.
